Summary

Kemira is recognised as a global leader in sustainable chemical solutions for water-intensive industries. Building on its sustainability commitments, the company sought to align with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) by conducting a comprehensive double materiality assessment. The assessment identified key sustainability-related impacts, risks, and opportunities that now guide the company’s sustainability strategy and are reinforced through key performance indicators integrated into its business decision-making.

Partnering with Impaktly, Kemira designed and implemented a holistic double materiality assessment, which utilised Kemira’s existing sustainability assessments, external research, stakeholder engagement and collaboration across key functions to evaluate sustainability-related impacts risks and opportunities. In addition to the discovery of impacts, risks and opportunities, our collaboration resulted in the definition of strategic key performance indicators to strengthen the implementation of company’s sustainability strategy.

Key outcomes

  • Recommendations for sustainability strategy

  • Strategic sustainability KPIs

Our approach

The process began by defining a comprehensive approach for impact, risk and opportunity analysis and evaluation. Together, the team conducted an in-depth assessment of sustainability-related negative and positive impacts, business risks and opportunities. The analysis was informed by Kemira’s existing assessments of environmental and social risks, key informant interviews across functions, and desktop research of relevant topics in the industry. In addition, key stakeholders for the company were interviewed to complement existing stakeholder information. Material impacts, risks and opportunities were evaluated in several workshops and validation sessions, in which key experts and decision-makers participated to give their perspectives for the evaluation.

After the discovery of material topics, we proceeded with the update of key performance indicators to guide the company’s sustainability strategy execution. In the definition of key performance indicators, best practices from global sustainability leaders were utilised, and the indicators were chosen considering alignment with business strategy and the impact on material topics identified. The key performance indicator definition was conducted collaboratively with a cross-functional team, and they were validated by the company’s sustainability steering committee.
